Seam Finishes

Seam finishes are used to keep the raw edges of seam allowances from raveling. They can also add a
professional-looking touch to an item, producing neat, clean seam edges that can make an item look
as nice on the inside as it does on the outside.

The type of finish you choose for your seams depends on:

  • The kind of fabric you’re working with
  • How neat you want your seams to look and whether they’ll be seen
  • How durable the finish needs to be
  • The amount of time you’re willing to spend on the task
  • The kind of sewing machine you have

And there's no need to finish seams:

  • If your working with a fabric doesn’t ravel, such as felt or fleece.

  • If your garment will be lined and the seams won't show (however, you may want to finish the
seams if your fabric ravels easily).
