Sewing Quick Tip:

Always test your
marking method
on a scrap of your
fabric first to make
sure it can be
removed. And keep
in mind that some
inks can become
permanent if
washed or ironed,
so be sure to
follow the
manufacturer’s
instructions.
Sewing Quick Tip:

Always test fusible
interfacing by
applying it to a
scrap of your fabric
first before
applying it to your
garment piece.
This is to make
sure you like the
look and feel of the
interfacing with
your fabric and to
help you time the
bonding process.

A set of colorful baby burp cloths can
make a great baby shower gift. And the
simplest designs are not only quick and
easy to make, but can be quite
inexpensive too. And many of these
tutorials present fun and creative ideas
for dressing up your birth cloths with
fringe, trim, or ruffles. You may even want
to ask the mother to be about her nursery
decor and choose coordinating fabrics.

Since you'll probably be making your burp
cloths from cotton fabrics (and of course,
you'll want your recipient to be able to
launder them) you'll want to preshrink
your fabric (and any trims too!). And
since cotton fabrics don't always shrink
their maximum amount with the first

washing, you may want to actually preshrink your fabrics more than once.

Because of their simple shapes, burp cloths can be a great first project for someone who's just
learning to sew (if you know of a mother to be you can pass them on to). Plus, because of
what they'll be used for, (catching baby spit-up!), it'll be okay if they're not quite perfect.

If you'll be giving your burp cloths as a gift, have fun with your presentation! You can roll up
several burp cloths and place them into a basket or gift bag or you can simply tie a ribbon
around them. And you may want to check out
Whipperberry and Cute as a Fox for two adorable
tutorials for making your burp cloths look like cupcakes!
