Free Patterns: Stage & Historical Costumes
If a project includes a printable pattern, you’ll see a “p” next to its title. If a project doesn’t include a
pattern template, don’t despair! It likely consists of simple fabric shapes (like squares and rectangles)
that you can easily measure and cut yourself.

Note that some projects may be designed for a specific type of sewing machine. But don’t let that
discourage you! If a project you like calls for, say, complex embroidery stitches and you have just a
simple zigzag machine, you can try experimenting with a satin stitch, hand-embroidering a design, or
adding purchased embellishments instead.

Sewing Quick Tip:

If you’ve accidentally pressed a ridge into the right side of your fabric, this may work to
remove it:

Try steaming the area (don’t press) and using a brush or your fingers to fluff the area back
up. Or try dampening the area with water from a spray bottle (if your fabric can be
dampened without causing damage) and then re-pressing it.

If you find yourself
short on
interfacing, you
can join smaller
pieces of fusible
interfacing to make
one larger piece.
When
applying,either
slightly overlap the
edges of the pieces
or butt the edges
of the pieces
together to avoid
bulk.

If you don’t have
quite enough fabric
for your pattern
layout, try placing
some of the pieces
on the cross-grain
(perpendicular to
your fabric’s
selvedges). Just
keep in mind that
your finished
garment may hang
differently.
