Free Skirt Patterns
If a project includes a printable pattern, you’ll see a “p” next to its title. If a project doesn’t include a
pattern template, don’t despair! It likely consists of simple fabric shapes (like squares and rectangles)
that you can easily measure and cut yourself.

Note that some projects may be designed for a specific type of sewing machine. But don’t let that
discourage you! If a project you like calls for, say, complex embroidery stitches and you have just a
simple zigzag machine, you can try experimenting with a satin stitch, hand-embroidering a design, or
adding purchased embellishments instead.

Sewing Quick Tips:

Some hemming tips:

Always hang your finished garment for at least 24 hours before hemming it. This is especially
important with fabrics that are prone to stretching, such as knits or bias-cut garments.

When deciding how wide to make a skirt hem, as a general rule, give narrower skirts wider
hems and wider skirts, narrower hems. But ultimately, use whatever hem width will make
your skirt hang nicely when finished. And don’t feel you have to follow the hem width
indicated on the pattern.

When measuring and pressing a hem, use a hem gauge (a flat piece of metal with
measurement markings on it) to keep the top edge of the hem from pressing a ridge into the
right side of your fabric.

Sewing Quick Tip:

When stitching
heavy denim
fabrics, use a
special denim or
jeans sewing
machine needle.
The thicker shaft
and sharper point
of this needle can
pierce through
layers of thick
denim easily and
without breaking.
Sewing Quick Tip:

For more accurate
stitching and more
comfortable
sewing, position
your sewing
machine, if
possible, so that
you’re sitting right
in front of the
needle, instead of
centered with your
sewing machine
with the needle off
to one side.
