And to sew from either fur, felt, or woven fabric. And the flat elephant designs, consisting of just one or two pattern pieces would probably be easy enough for a beginner to sew.

And making a stuffed animal can be a great way to use up larger fabric scraps you may have leftover from other projects. It can also be a great way to use larger quilting fabrics like fat quarters.

And since some of these designs call for working with fur, here are some tips that you may find helpful:

Cut your fur wrong side up. And cut your fur in one layer instead of doubling it as you would with most fabrics (just remember to cut opposite pieces as required). This way, your cuts will likely be more accurate. And in order to avoid cutting into the fur, cut just into the fabric backing. And since most fur has a nap to it, just remember to cut your fabric pieces in the same direction so that the fur in your finished softie will run in the same direction. And if your pattern pieces are quite small, you may want to cut them from a light-weight cardboard and trace around them instead of pinning them to your fur.

And if your elephant design calls for felt, consider using a higher quality wool felt rather than a cheaper acrylic felt. Your finished elephant will likely look nicer and last longer.

And if you plan to give your finished elephant plush as a gift to a baby or toddler, just remember not to embellish the stuffed animal with any items that could come off and become a choking hazard (like buttons).
