So, what exactly is a sheath dress? It's a straight cut dress that hangs from the shoulders and has no waistband. The sheath dress is often confused with the "shift dress," which is also a straight cut dress with no waistband. However, a sheath dress is designed to fit close to the body, following the body's curves, often using shaping seams such as darts and princess seams. Whereas a shift dress is meant to fit more loosely on the body and has either a boxy shape or a slight a-line shape. Because of its loose fit, a shift dress tends to be a more casual dress. Whereas the fitted shape of a sheath dress lends itself well to more formal or evening wear.
Choose a sheath dress when you want to highlight your curves but don't want an overly tight dress. And a short sleeve or sleeveless style sheath dress can make an excellent dress for spring or summer, especially when sewn from a light to medium weight linen or cotton fabric.
And because of the relatively basic shape of a sheath dress, it might make a good project for someone just learning how to sew, especially if sewn from a medium weight woven fabric and one of the sleeveless styles is chosen. But the new seamstress may want to avoid a sheath dress style with princess seams which can be a bit tricky to sew.
