Sew a lovely shirt dress with this collection of ten free button down shirt dress patterns, tutorials, and diy sewing projects gathered from all over the web, with printable pdf templates.

Here you'll find a variety of shirt dress styles, including sleeveless, short sleeve, and long sleeved designs, belted and unbelted styles, and designs with either straight, a-line, or gathered skirts.

So, what exactly is shirt dress? Sometimes called a "shirtwaist" dress, it's a casual dress style that has the look of a man's dress shirt, complete with a button down front and a collar. The dress may or may not have sleeves and may be belted at the waist or left loose. The dress can also be long or short. And what's great about a shirt dress is that it's flattering to most body types because of its generally loose fit and button down front.

Popular fabric choices for shirt dresses are light to medium weight woven fabrics such as cotton and linen. But feel free to experiment with other types of fabric for your shirt dress such as rayon, denim, or even knits. Sew one of the looser shirt dress styles from cotton or linen, and you'll have a great dress for summer.

A shirt dress is often sewn from a solid color fabric in order to show off the dress's design details (the front placket and front pockets, if any) But feel free to choose a fun print for your dress (and if you're a new sewer, sewing your shirt dress from a print can help hide any imperfections in you finished dress). And feel free to have fun with your design, perhaps sewing the collar and belt from a contrasting fabric or adding contrasting buttons.

And just remember, especially if you'll be sewing your dress from cotton or linen, to prewash your fabric first before sewing your dress in order to preshrink it and wash out any excess dye.
