So, what exactly is a slip dress? It's a simple, a-line dress that resembles a slip. In other words, it resembles the lightweight garment meant to be worn under a dress. A slip dress is a sleeveless dress style, with no defined waist, that usually hangs from the shoulders with spaghetti straps, and has a v-neck or scoop neckline. It can be long or short and is usually designed to fit close to the body and flare out at the hemline. Sometimes called a "camisole dress," a slip dress is also a popular style for nightgowns.

A slip dress is often sewn from smooth, lightweight fabrics like satin or silk, but can be successfully sewn from other fabrics such as velvet or even cotton. A slip dress is often, but not always, cut on the bias, which can improve the drape of the dress and give it some stretch when worn.

Because of its sleeveless style, a slip dress can make a great dress for summer. In cooler weather, or for more modesty, consider wearing a t-shirt under your slip dress.

Because of the simplicity of the slip dress style, it would probably make a good project for a beginner. It often consists of just two fabric pieces, has no waistband, no collar, no sleeves, and would need just minimal fitting. If you are a beginner, you may want to stay away from slippery fabrics like satin or silky fabrics, which can be challenging to work with. Better to stick with a woven fabric or perhaps a medium weight knit fabric.

If you do decide to sew your slip dress from satin or silk, you may find the following tips helpful: Lay your fabric out in a single layer (just remember to cut opposites of any pattern pieces that need it). And cut your pattern pieces going in the same direction because satin has a subtle nap to it. Also, use a brand new, fine needle in your sewing machine.
