25 Free Spring & Summer Placemat Patterns
What a pretty way to dress up a table to reflect the change of seasons (as well as
add a bit of protection to your table). And if you're looking for a quick-to-make
project, you may want to sew one of the simpler placemat designs consisting of
just two fabric pieces that are turned and top stitched. Or, if you want to get a bit
fancier, you can dress up your placemats with pretty trims such as pom poms or
bias tape. Get even more elaborate by choosing one of the quilted patchwork
designs. And if you really want to go all out, you can add pockets to your placemats
for utensils and make coordinating napkins and coasters.
And a placemat can make an excellent first project for a beginner who's just
learning how to sew. Since a simpler placemat design usually has only two fabric
pieces and just a few straight seams, its construction should be quick and simple.
And one of the patchwork quilted designs would make an excellent first project for
someone new to quilting. Since a quilted placemat is much smaller than a bed quilt,
it will be easier for the new quilter to handle and sew. Plus, it will stitch up much
faster than a bed quilt and quickly give the new quilter a sense of satisfaction from
a completed project.
And just remember that if you do choose to sew one of the patchwork placemat
designs and you want to be able to launder your finished placemats, you may want
to prewash your fabrics first to reduce the chance of shrinkage and the chance of
fabric dyes bleeding onto one another.
