Here you'll find a variety of tiered dress designs specifically for women, in both casual and formal styles, with sleeves and sleeveless strappy styles, short sundresses and long maxi dresses.

So, what exactly is a "tiered dress"? Sometimes called a "layered dress," it's a dress with a series of horizontal, gathered or ruffled layers that make up the skirt of the dress. Each layer is wider than the layer above it, which gives the dress a loose, "flowy" or "twirly" look. The dress can have just two layers or many, multiple layers. It usually has an a-line profile, but can also be somewhat fitted. And the dress can be dressy or casual. And because of the loose fit of the dress, it's both quite comfortable and flattering to many body types. Recommended fabrics to use for your tiered dress to keep that "flowy" look are lightweight cotton, linen, rayon, and lightweight knits.

Because of loose, flowy fit of a tiered dress, it can make a great dress for summer, especially when sewn from summer-friendly fabrics like lightweight cotton or linen. Choose a "strappy" style and a tiered dress becomes a cute sundress. This dress style can even make a great beach dress/beach coverup.

And because of the simplicity of the design, a tiered dress could make a good first project for someone new to sewing. And because this type of dress is meant to fit loosely over the body, little to no fitting should be required, especially if a sleeveless style is chosen. Just remember, that because of the gathered panels, this type of dress often requires lots of fabric (and lots of thread for sewing the gathers), especially if it's a maxi dress. And just remember that if you want your finished dress to be washable, to prewash your fabric before beginning your project.
