Here you'll find a collection of adorable whale sewing patterns from easy-to-sew flat designs to more realistic three dimensional designs, that you can sew from either fabric or felt.
And any small stuffed animal can be a great way to use up fabric scraps you have leftover from other sewing projects. And you can even used finely chopped fabric scraps (that are too small for other sewing projects) for your stuffed animal stuffing instead of the more traditional fiberfill stuffing.
And one of the flat whale designs would probably be easy enough for a beginner to sew, especially if she sews it from a medium weight cotton fabric, which will be easy to work with, instead of fur, which can be a bit more challenging to sew. And to add more visual interest to one of these simpler designs, she can try sewing it from a fun print, or perhaps sewing the top of the whale from one fabric and the belly of the whale from a coordinating or contrasting fabric.
And if you choose to sew the denim whale design on this page, just remember to use a thicker needle in your sewing machine which will pierce the thicker denim fabric more easily than a standard sewing needle.
And if your whale softie will be a gift for a baby or toddler, just remember not to embellish it with any items that could come off and become a choking hazard (like buttons). You may also want to use extra strong thread for your seams or stitch your seams twice for extra durability.
And if you want to be able to launder your finished plushie, consider prewashing your fabrics to avoid shrinkage of your finished item and to wash out any excess dye from your fabric.
