Sure, you could wear a loose-fitting t-shirt, a simple knit dress, or a casual tank top and shorts at the beach, but why not wear something prettier and much more stylish? Plus, a looser-fitting beach cover-up will be easier to remove for swimming and will allow air to circulate better to keep you cool and allow your swimsuit to dry more quickly.
Choose a flowy fabric for your beach coverup (if suitable for the style) like a cotton gauze, seersucker, a lightweight knit, or rayon and it will drape and flatter you better. And the great thing about rayon is that it's wrinkle resistant, which makes it a great fabric for travel.
And to add a fun element to your beach cover-up, consider adding a colorful trim to the hem. Pom pom trim seems to be in fashion at the moment and will add a touch of whimsy to your garment, but feel free to embellish your beach cover-up with other fun trims such as fringe, lace, or even ric rac.
And if you choose a more structured design for your beach cover-up, terry cloth can be a good choice due to its absorbency. Just remember that terry cloth has a nap to it, so keep this in mind when cutting your fabric pieces. Also, use a needle in your sewing machine designed for thicker fabrics, and finish the raw edges of your seam allowances, since terry cloth is prone to fraying.
And because most of these projects are super simple to make, often requiring just one piece of fabric, a few cuts and seams, and a simple neck binding, most of them would make a great first project for a beginner to sew. And since there are no shaping seams and it's basically a one-size-fits-all garment, no fitting will be required.
