So of course, a baby hat or cap serves the practical purpose of keeping baby's head warm. But as you can see, they can also be quite adorable, especially when one or two knots are added to the top of the hat or the hat is made from a cute print fabric.
A knit baby hat can also be an easy project for a beginner. And even though knits can be a bit tricky to work with, these caps should be easy to sew because they consist of simple shapes and just a few seams. And one of these baby hats can also be a quick to make project for an experienced seamstress.
One (or more) of these baby hats can make also make a great baby shower gift. And because the hats are made from stretchy knit fabric, there's no need to know baby's exact size.
And since these caps are made from knit fabrics, you might find the following tips helpful: Because the right and wrong sides of knit fabrics tend to look very similar, you may want to mark the right side of your fabric pieces with tape or chalk. And when sewing your knit hat, use a ballpoint needle in your sewing machine, which will slide between the threads of your knit fabric instead of piercing them. And use either a fine zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch, which will allow your finished seams to stretch without breaking. And if find your knit fabric curling along the edges, try spraying them with sizing, then pressing them to make them lay flat.
And since you'll likely want to be able to launder your finished baby hat, just remember to pre-wash any cotton fabrics in order to prevent your finished hat from shrinking.
