So, what is a "knot bag" (often referred to as a "Japanese knot bag")? It's an unstructured bag similar in shape to a hobo bag, but without a traditional closure. Instead, one handle of the bag is made longer than the other and is designed to slip through the shorter handle to form a "knot," which closes the bag to keep your items secure. The bag can then be carried by the longer handle, or placed around your wrist. Knot bags are often small or mini in size and are often created to be reversible.
This cute, casual bag can make a great, small grocery or shopping bag. And since a knot bag has no hardware, it can easily be laundered for cleaning. Just remember that if you want your finished bag to be washable, to make sure to prewash your fabrics first before constructing your bag. This way, you'll avoid dye transfer and shrinkage of your finished bag.
And of, course, by making your own knot bag, you get to choose your own fabrics. You can coordinate your outer fabric with your lining or choose contrasting fabrics for a more fun look. Making a knot bag can also be a great way to use larger quilting pre-cuts, such as fat quarters.
And since this bag is a very simple design with a simple shape, with no buttons, zippers or traditional closures of any kind, and has very few seams to sew (and the handles of the bag are part of the bag's design), a knot bag can be an easy bag project for a beginner to sew. Plus, knot bags are traditionally made from medium-weight, woven fabrics (as opposed to slippery or thicker fabrics), which tend to be easy fabrics to work with.
