Here you'll find a variety of quilt patterns ranging from traditional to modern, for both beginner and advanced quilters.

So, in case you're not familiar with the term "layer cake," it's a bundle of about forty two fabric pieces, each measuring ten inches square. Moda Fabrics originated the term "layer cake," so just be aware that other fabric companies may sell similar bundles, but call them by different names.

And what's great about making a quilt with pre-cuts is that the fabrics are usually from the same line. Which means they provide an easy way to sample all of the fabrics from a single line (and more cheaply than by buying yardage), and the fabrics will coordinate well.

And what's great about layer cakes specifically is that, because of their larger size, they can be great for showcasing large-scale prints. Layer cake pre-cuts are also more versatile than smaller pre-cuts like jelly rolls and charm packs because theycan be cut into smaller squares of differing sizes. Plus, if you want a quick quilt to make, you can always simply leave the squares intact and sew them together.

Should you wash your layer cake pre-cuts? The benefit, of course, would be to prevent shrinkage of your finished quilt and to help prevent fabric bleeding. Some quilters prefer to pre-wash their fabrics, others believe it isn't necessary as long as you're using high quality fabrics. If you do decide to pre-wash your layer cake fabric, trim the edges of each fabric piece with pinking shears before laundering to prevent excessive fraying. Also, place the fabric pieces in a mesh bag or zippered pillowcase to keep them together. And, of course, press your fabric pieces before using them.
