Here you'll find a variety of charm pack projects from those that require just a square or two of fabric and will stitch up quick, to more advance projects such as placemats, table toppers, tote bags, and full size bed quilts.

And in case you're not familiar with the term "charm pack," it's a bundle of about forty pre-cut fabric squares, each measuring 5 x 5 inches (there are also "mini" charm squares that measure one quarter the size of traditional charm squares, or 2.5 x 2.5 inches). Moda Fabrics coined the term "charm pack," so just be aware that other fabric makers may call these packs by different names. And of course, you can always make your own charm squares from larger pieces of fabric.

Pre-cut fabric bundles were created for quilters to save on cutting time, but they can also be used for all kinds of fun sewing projects like the ones on these pages. And they can be a great way to use the odd square or two of fabric you may have left over from a larger quilting project.

And you can, of course, leave your charm squares intact and simply stitch them together in a patchwork fashion, adding interest to your design by mixing colors and prints. Or, you can cut your charm squares into smaller squares, strips, triangles, rectangles, or even hexagons for even more visual interest.

Should you pre-wash your charm squares to prevent color bleed or shrinkage of your finished item? Some sewers think pre-washing isn't necessary as long as you're using quality fabric, while others prefer to pre-wash their pre-cuts. If you do choose to pre-wash your charm squares, place them in a laundry bag or pillowcase to keep them together. And also keep in mind that the agitation from laundering may cause some fraying to occur. Also, be sure to press your squares before sewing your item.
